About the data

Republican-vs-democrat.jpg

This dataset has been extracted and compiled from several sources in April 2011.

The state political information comes from Wikipedia's Red States and Blue States as well as visiting each state's Wikipedia page to get the balance of power in each legislature and the governor's party affiliation.

As this data was used for an economic evaluation performed in early 2011, if there was a change of the governor's party affiliation due to the recent November 2010 election, then the previous term's party affiliation was substituted. For example, Arnold Schwarzenneger was the Republican governor of California until the November 2010 election. Subsequently, Jerry Brown, a Democrat, was elected. So "Republican" was used instead since this has been California's gubernatorial affiliation since 2003.

The unemployment data comes from The Bureau of Labor Statistics.

And finally, the estimated budget gaps were gleaned from The Center on Budget and Policy Priorities.
